Process for stabilising banana pseudostem fibers for use as filter media material in dry, humid and aqueous environment.

A process for obtaining stabilized banana stem fibers was developed by grafting onto it a naturally sourced antimicrobial function. The said product inhibited the growth of pathogenic bacteria such as E. Coli and had an appreciable mechanical resistance even when immersed in aqueous media. The said fiber is renewable, nontoxic and biodegradable at the end of its life. Such a material has great suitability to replace synthetic organic fibers which are non renewable and non biodegradable and whose excessive use has been shown to cause environmental pollution.
